The Indo-Aryan's Sanskrit name for Astrology is Jyotish, which means 'Science of Light', or 'Science of Energy'.
It is considered of Divine origin, revealed to 18 sages, about 4,500 years ago. The most known are: Sage Parashara, Jaimini and Garga. It was passed down orally in an almost uninterrupted fashion from generation to generation.
Vedic Astrology is considered by the rishis, after the Vedas and Upanishads, as the most important Vedic science, followed by Ayurveda.
The purpose of Vedic Astrology, is to assist in delineating the life of an individual in its entire spectrum, as well as identifying and timing events, and its mode of manifestation. It is used to promote understanding of the Self, enhance human welfare, and reduce suffering.
It is the most accurate Life Management Resource Tool available.
It is frequently called Predictive Astrology, because of its accuracy in predicting and timing life events.
This predictive ability is due to the level of refinement of the various components of the science, and requires a significant depth of understanding and perception, on the part of the practitioner.
The Jyotish tradition requires its practitioners to observe strict adherence to specific spiritual and moral injunctions, and stresses that the main focus of the practitioner should be to serve his fellow man, and not selfish aggrandizement. The Jyotish texts are very clear, in that a practitioners duty is to provide:
1)Accurate Assessment of the Natal Chart of the Individual, to
2)Time Events as precisely as possible, to
3)Provide Event Guidance from an astrological perspective, and to
4)Suggest Astrological Remedies, if applicable.
The remedies in Jyotish are termed spiritual, because it is believed that suffering and disease are the result of mans misalignment with his true spiritual nature.
In Astrology, the planets are regarded as carriers of different types of energies, and the houses where the zodiacal signs reside, are areas of life, or different departments of life of an individual, where these energies ultimately find expression.
Planets in themselves do not rule a person or events, they solely indicate energies and tendencies, that will manifest at certain periods. As a result, it can be changed by the assertion of your free will, among other things.
Identifying these energies and their impact on your life, enables control over life situations. A deeper understanding of how these forces operate, provides pertinent information to make appropriate choices.
"The soul is ever free... therefore, one's personal destiny must be accompanied by personal action. The keynote of astrology is discrimination in action."
Vedic Astrology also provides a diverse array of remedial measures, to modify the effects of planetary energies.
The different areas of life that can be analyzed using Astrology are many. They include: Career, Finances, Partnership Compatibility, Marriage, Children, Spirituality, Health & Longevity, Journeys, and Parents & Sibling, among others.
Astrology also applies to Business Corporations, Countries, Geography, and Auspicious Timing of Events.
Vedic Astrology is based on the Sidereal Zodiac as opposed to the Vernal Zodiac(Tropical) of Western Astrology. Vedic astrologers attribute great amount of their predictive accuracy because of the usage of the Sidereal Zodiac.
In the Sidereal Zodiac, the Vernal Equinox which used to occur in the constellation of Aries now occurs in the constellation of Pisces, due to the Precession of the Equinoxes, of about 23 degrees. This is different from the Tropical Zodiac, which identifies the commencement of the Vernal Equinox to be the beginning of the Sun's entrance into the sign of Aries.
The Indo-Aryans also discovered that the planets have representations on the hands of the individual, and compiled a sophisticated treatise on Chiromancy. The determination of the ascendant, the conditions of the planets, and specific life areas, can also be effectively identified and described.
